In 2020, Reader’s Digest announced its 50 Nicest Places to Live, and each state was presented with a winner. Connecticut’s winner was Bloomfield. In the past, the criteria that was ranked included school systems, public transportation and recreational or entertainment activities. While Bloomfield has all those things, it was also voted a place where neighborly love reigns in this pandemic era.

According to Reader’s Digest, it started with a nomination by Sophia Shepherd. Apparently, her freezer broke down during the start of the pandemic. A neighbor was asked (via text) if she had room in her freezer for Sophia’s meat. While she didn’t have room, the neighbor did have a spare full-size refrigerator that was delivered to her home. Another neighbor gave her a new freezer. No one expected anything in return.

“In 2020, more than ever, people looked to their neighbors, friends and family for the strength to overcome some of the biggest challenges we’ve faced as a nation. In every state, there are places where people are doing heroic things every day to make their communities better places,” Reader’s Digest said.
